Fish of Lebanon by Liza Restaurant
Open Studio

The diversity and generosity hidden in the sea is something we cannot afford to lose.
"Fish of Lebanon" is a non-scientific attempt at a census of the sea population off the coast of Lebanon. When I was a child I used to see these figure drawings hanging on the walls of fish restaurants: colorful images of multiple sea creatures – all different, all beautiful. This is a photographic continuation to these drawings.
Marco Pinarelli is a photographer working in the Middle East and in Europe. He has been collaborating with Liza for years. This project is also the result of a long-term mutual respect.

Data Vis-a-Vis The City by Ahmad Barclay, Joumana Ibrahim
Workshop

This hands-on workshop is for anyone with an interest in data visualization and in cities. No previous experience of data or design required. Participants will get a crash course in data-driven visual storytelling, collect data from the city around them, and have a go at telling their own visual stories.
We will first start with an introduction to data visualization, exploring questions like what is data? how do we collect and organize it? how to best represent it to communicate our message?
Participants will then be collecting their data, and working on a specific theme that will be shared during the workshop. They will analyze their findings, and create one or a series of visuals that help communicate their theme.

The Broken Window By richart Khali
Workshop

The workshop is a game where participants learn how to make activists scenarios for urban changes through role playing.
We will take the issues of gentrification and greenery and set up the environment so stakeholders would know how to respond and therefore present different proposals.

In a more developed way, the workshop aims to take one neighborhood in Beirut, project a fictional case where some developers will build a tower in place of an old building and a park.
The participants will be divided into groups that reflects the social fabric in such projects such as the neighborhood committee, the municipality, the banks, the developers, different ngos, etc.
Each group will have a declared agenda and a hidden one and will all discuss the pros and cons of such a project for the city, over the neighborhood model.
Participants will have to build a case that defends their point of view and the workshop may not attain a recommendation (which is not the target) but the outcomes will teach the different groups about the notion of participatory urbanism, public policies, activism and urban wellbeing.

Design in the cities by Ardeco
Open Studio

Every city has its unique culture, traditions, taste, designs and way of life… The handcrafting and materials of a design from each city reflects its lifestyle, and the traditions of its habitants. An armchair from Paris sends a different message than an armchair from Copenhagen: The first in its ornaments and polished materials reflects luxury and opulence, while the other with raw materials give us a less sophisticated, down to earth impression.
During BDW18, you will experiment how the hand craft and material of a design from one city reflect its history, its origin, whether it’s Paris, Copenhagen, Warsaw or Berlin.

Abandoned Places, Public Spaces: Heritage Preservation
Arab Center for Architecture
Exhibition

The exhibition will focus on various works produced by students and professionals, that address abandoned, neglected and residual spaces as potential public spaces and venues. It will show a selection of design projects that were never implemented but that show how industrial, vernacular and natural heritage, how unexploited potentials of the urban fabric, can become propelling elements of contemporary urban life. The decaying remains of the national railway system, the houses and gardens frozen by a defunct highway project, the neglected wilderness of an endangered coastal peninsula, the century-old trees gone wild in countless fallows and abandoned gardens… are some of the potentials this exhibition will try to expose as levers for the advancement of quality of life in the city.

Master-Planning in Lebanon: Manufacturing Landscapes of Inequality
Public Works Studio in collaboration with Legal Agenda
Seminar and Publication Launch

How does urban planning happen in Lebanon? What is the drive behind it? In what ways does it violate our collective rights? Join us for a 2-day seminar and publication launch where we discuss how planning replicates inequalities and power relations, and maintains the dominance of the privileged. By presenting timelines, maps, and case studies from Zouk, Damour, Adloun, Tunis and more, we show how factors such as law, ownership, identity, and interests contribute to displacing practices, livelihoods and sometimes communities.
